North Star

Usually used to reference a specific, quantifiable metric — a North Star is the single measure that best captures the core value a product or service delivers to customers, acting as a guiding light for long-term, sustainable growth. It aligns team efforts, balances customer value with business results, and acts as a leading indicator of revenue.

Like many of the terms on this list, the initially intended definition's borders have grown fuzzy in time and we find ourselves using North Star to refer to much more than a specific metric — whether it be the essential visual reference, positive feedback from a relevant icon in the space or just keeping your organization afloat for one more quarter — almost anything can be the be used as a navigational luminary.
